Millions of cats and dogs are brutally killed each year in Southeast Asia for the cat-and-dog meat trade. It is widely—but mistakenly—believed that these animals only come from purpose-built “farms.” In Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, the vast majority are captured strays or stolen pets.
A Hellish Journey
The methods of transporting them to slaughterhouses, markets, and restaurants are unimaginably horrific. The animals are crammed into tiny cages and then loaded onto trucks or tied to the back of motorbikes. This causes fractures and other injuries, and by the time they arrive at their destination, many dogs are already exhausted or suffering from heatstroke.
Tortured for Profit
Before slaughter, some dogs are cruelly force-fed rice through tubes to increase their market weight and price, while others may be beaten under the mistaken belief that it tenderizes the meat. The most common slaughter methods include drowning alive, bludgeoning with sticks, stabbing with knives, boiling to death, or burning with blowtorches.
